The Allgäu – a paradise in the deep south of Germany
Here is such pretty scenery, normally found on post cards, Lake Constance, the gradually rising foothills of the Alps, the mountain peaks around Widderstein and Geisshorn and the fairy tale castle at Neuschwanstein, an ancient landscape with distinct regions. Diversity for visitors seeking something different, sports of various types and cultural highlights: it´s all there making the Allgäu a very interesting and beautiful area to take a holiday at any time of year.
Accommodation in hotels, holiday homes or flats, guesthouses, B and B blend into the natural surroundings, whether near the towns or remote away from civilisation. Depending on where you want to stay, you can find a luxurious hotel in a spa, a modern but still cosy holiday flat or a room to let in a private house.
The Allgäu is a land of lakes, marshy lakes, reservoirs or smaller lakes fed by springs, ponds, meres, rivers and streams, over 100 are to be found distributed over the whole region . All colours of the rainbow are represented in the water, the marshy lakes with their different shades of brown, the mountain lakes green and turquoise, and in the warmer lower parts more blue in the lakes with beaches where swimmers come. On top of this there are more than 100 open air pools. In the Faulbacher valley there are three gorgeous lakes almost next door to each other, or the somewhat cooler Alat Lake with clean water suitable for drinking. Legends and mystery are associated with the Alat lake, buried treasure from Neuschwanstein is supposed to be hidden there.
Three famous routes wind their way through the Allgäu: the Swabian Barock route, the Romantic route and the German Alps route. A variety of building from different eras such as Romanesque and Barock churches, monastries, palaces and castles, ancient swabian half-timbered houses in medieval towns.
Kings and emperors have left their mark, such as in Kempten where the Roman remains are part of an archaeological Park. The atmosphere in the small towns with their historical building, modern little shops and winding alleyways is just right for an afternoon stopover.
The number of lovely churches, palaces, castles and ruins nestled between gentle hills or steep mountains contribute to the uniqueness of the Allgäu. Should you want to feel like a king for a day there is no lack of possibilities here. The best place is perhaps the unforgettable Neuschwanstein. Linderhof Palace is just as beautiful with its park and many fountains not to be found anywhere else.
Oberstdorf is the most important town for alpine sports. Valleys to the south have wonderful cross-country ski runs and should there be little snow, you can go up to the Gottesacker plateau over th Kleinwalser valley. The longest downhill run is on the Nebelhorn and can be reached in the cabins of the cablecar carrying up to 100 passengers. More runs are to be found near the Fellhorn and Kanzelwand.
The friendly, helpful service in all forms of accommodation make your stay very pleasant, so welcome to the wonders of the Allgäu!!
